What's New On The Canberra Shipmates Site

August 28, 2002 - Rebuilding Sea Stories section!

  • The Sea Stories section links became snarled up, so all the articles have been backed up and are being restored in a new framework.  Please be patient as the old articles are returned to the site.

We now have another category of articles to chose from.  You'll notice that Nautical Humor has been added to the pick list.
  • Added a link to the National Association of Fleet Tug Sailors to the Navy Links page.

July 27th, 2002 - First look at the 1966-67 Cruise Book project!

  •   The first two sections of the 1966-67 Cruise Book are now available for viewing.  See the opening pages of the "first draft" of the first phase of this project.  A lot of folks have asked about this and so here is the first cut.  These cruise book pages have been scanned and stored as Adobe Acrobat files (.pdf) and will require the use of Acrobat Reader, a free download from:

July 21st, 2002 - Expanded Ship's Company section!

  •   The 2002 Boston Reunion was held in Baton Rouge.  Your Webmaster was fortunate enough to be able to stop by for a brief visit.  See photos on this new page in the News & Articles section.

July 17th, 2002 - Expanded Ship's Company section!

  •   S-2 Division has been added to the Ship's Company section.  How could I have forgotten these guys????  Sorry 'bout that.  Thanks to Bob Elliott for getting my attention on this one.

July 7th, 2002 - New feature!

  • Deck Logs added to the News & Articles section.
Thanks to the diligent research of Ed Huntington, we now have "official" copies of a few pages from Canberra's actual deck logs.  Read the words that capture some of our history.  These logs have been scanned and stored as Adobe Acrobat files (.pdf) and will require the use of Acrobat Reader, a free download from:

May 12th, 2002 - New features.

  • Prayer List added to the In Memoriam section.  This page was added to offer spiritual support to our shipmates and others who have requested to be remembered in prayer.
  • Added new page in the Captains' Quarters for Captain Woods ('65-'66.)
  • Due to an apparent lack of interest, the Nautical Humor (jokes) page has been removed.

March 30th, 2002 - New features.

  • Captains' Quarters added to the In Memoriam section.  This is where our commanding officers have their own pages.  Added new pages for Captain Compton ('67-'69.)
  • Added pages for N Division.  Our first Quartermaster has signed on, Ron "Pat" Patterson.
  • Updated many of the Ship's Company pages to include guys that have signed in on the Quarterdeck Log.

March 2nd, 2002 - New features.

  • Dennis Kempf has sent some new photos for 4th Division.  John George has provided more pix of S-1 and Subic.  Ken Minick brings a lot of really old photos that expand our collection considerably along with captions so you'll know more about what the photos are about.  Thanx, guys!  That's how this site will continue to grow.  Remember, there won't be any "new" Canberra pictures.  All we can do is hope folks will share the ones they have.
  • Added features to include both CA-70 (WWII era) and CAG-2 (Missile conversion.)  As we are all shipmates of the same ship, this is a natural evolution for the site.  Check it out:  U.S.S. Canberra pages.
  • Added more background music files.  Can you find them all?
  • We now have a download facility where you can pickup special programs, screen savers, desktop icons, and other neat stuff.

  • Added a new page for Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ.)  This should help everyone to better understand the key issues about our site.
  • For those of you who have wished that you had preserved those Canberra items that you bought from the ship's store, here is your chance to re-acquire some of those items.  Visit our new Ship's Store page, in the Internet Links section. (These are independent businesses.  The Webmaster derives NO benefit from these ads.)
  • We're entered in a web site contest.  Vote for this site through the GI graphic/link on the Home page.

The Shipmate Links page provides you with a listing of web sites offered by our fellow shipmates.  Contact the Webmaster, if you would like your site to be included.
    Nautical Humor
is our new jokes page.  It is a subsection of Sea StoriesDefinitely NOT "PC."  If you are concerned about having your delicate sensibilities challenged, don't go there.
If you do, you'll get a few belly laughs and will also have the opportunity to add your own favorites to the collection.
  • Added a link to to the Canberra Shipmates Mailing List on the Ship's Company page.  Now, there is a way you can add, remove, or modify your mail list record.
