"R" division is the ship's own repair force and is
comprised of Shipfitters and Damage Controlmen working in one for four
shops. Repairing and remodeling the ship's equipment, boats, internal and
external structure, and its various systems are accomplished through the
combined efforts of these shops.
Shipfitters work out of the pipe shop or the metal shop.
The Damage Controlmen have their own shop and a carpentry shop.
These men had the opportunity to practice their craft in
repairing battle damage sustained through enemy action in both WWII and in Viet
Nam.
