Responsibility for the movement of the Canberra was the job of the Navigation Department.  "N" Division, composed of Quartermasters, plotted the ship's course, whether it be steaming across wide oceans, using stars and LORAN, or firing off the coast of Viet Nam, using radar and visuals.  (Canberra never had the benefit of today's GPS satellites.)

Along wiht taking fixes and recommending courses to the OOD, the QMs were responsible for manning almost all control stations, when going alongside other ships for replenishments and at sea detail for entering and leaving port.

The navigation spaces included: the bridge, pilot house, chart house, secondary conn, navigation office, after steering, and the aeronautical office.
