Marine Detachment (9th Div)

My Rifle: The Creed of a U.S. Marine

Our Marine Detachment provided our on-board security force.  They manned one of the five inch mounts, mount 51, the machine gun posts, and provided for the landing parties.  In addition, they served as brig sentries and guards at the forward brow, when in port.  Of course, there was always the Captain's Orderly and internal security duties.  The Mar Det were also good shipmates.

In '67,  the Marines had their 191st birthday.  They really put on a show, in Melbourne, for the Coral Sea parade, too. With the CNO looking on and the U. S. Marine Corps Band playing, our Mar Det made everyone take notice.  I hope being a shipmate made them almost as proud as being in the Corps.

We extend our thanks and appreciation to Col. Walter Ford (USMC Ret.) and Leatherneck Magazine for helping to inform Canberra Marines of our web site.  Click on the Leatherneck logo to visit the magazine's web site.
