From the art of marlinspike seamanship to the craft of cargo handling, from ground tackle manipulation to quarterdeck decoration, First Division performs with skill and enthusiasm.

1st div is responsible for the maintenance of the main deck and sides from the bow to frame 66 and passageways through forward officer's country.  They steer the ship, drop the anchor, rig the accommodation ladder, polish brass and scrub the decks.  They chip, scrape, and paint their spaces.  Deck seamanship is a man's job.

In all kinds of weather, they handle powder, projectiles, food, and stores, delivered by UNREP ships, and tend the distance lines.  They also man the Canberra's main battery, the 8" guns.
